Future of the web

May 25th, 2006, under ,

In the past month or so, during which I haven’t really posted anything because of the usual end-term commitments in the academic world, there has been a rather strong debate going on in the USA (no, not the now nonexistent Union of South Africa, but the other USA, the one located in Northern America) about whether or not the infrastructure of the Internet should be changed so that content providers that would like their websites to load faster would need to pay extra for telecommunication giants. Meanwhile, the rest of the web would be slower. Popular Science has a fairly good and short article about what the whole thing is about, in case you have missed it. I have no idea how this would affect the universe outside the North-American country.

Wanna send something to space for free?

Then, at least in case you have homemade satellites lying around that you weren’t planning to launch yourself, contact the Japanese Space Agency.

How much does it cost to super-size?

May 25th, 2006, under , ,

Well, where I live the question is rather meaningless, as the largest size you can get at fast food joints is “large”. Which in the case of Kentucky Fried Chicken is more or less the same as “regular”, anyway. But those living in countries more attuned to the joys of overeating may be interested to know that the answer is “between $4.06 and $7.72 for men and $3.10 and $4.53 for women, depending on their body type”. You can read about the study here, and debate about the flaws in its reasoning wherever you want (except for here, as comments are off).

Note to self: Never ever use the word “joint” again when referring to places that serve food. It just isn’t you.

HIV, I presume

May 25th, 2006, under ,

Ok, the title admittedly doesn’t work but nevermind that. All I wanted to report about is that the source of the HIV virus (or HI virus, I suppose) has, it seems, been finally located in southern Cameroon.

DNA, RNA

Latest research in France has suggested that it is not only DNA, but also RNA that passes genetic information from one generation to the next. I’m sure textbook publishers all over the world are overjoyed.

Chocolate, once again

May 25th, 2006, under ,

Chocolate makes the news once again. This time, however, it is not blood pressure related. Oh no, now they say that milk chocolate may boost your brain power.
