Ethanol not as green as thought; soybean diesel more so

July 13th, 2006, under , ,

National Geographic reports that ethanol may not be quite as green an alternative to fossil fuels as has been thought. Meanwhile, soybean based biodiesel is more efficient. The article says, “soybean biodiesel produces 93 percent more energy than is expended in its creation. Corn-grain ethanol produces only 25 percent more. And when compared with fossil fuels, biodiesel produces 41 percent less greenhouse gas emissions, while ethanol produces 12 percent fewer.”
